技术上

Before the drum call

• Set up the circle (drums/percussion/chairs)
• Read the audience profile

Purpose of drum call

• build trust
• teach them your body language
• read the group – their ability

Techniques in the drum call

• Volume down / volume up
• Stop Cut / Back to Groove
• speed up / speed down – use bell to mark the pulse
• Call and response – sculpt half the circle -> continue -> sculpt the other half -> stop cut -> indicate the other half to continue -> “i play, you play” -> (no more than 4 patterns)
• Accent
• Rumble

More techniques

During a groove

• Zen sculpt – sculpt 3 instruments that are talking to each other, then select other random 3.
• Sculpt percussion as platform
• Vocal
• Slow down -> change it to 6/8
• 3 measure, each one solo

Start a groove

• one two let’s all play
• low drum rumble / medium drum rumble / high drum rumble -> layer in
• low drum first , talk to each other -> other drums join at leisure

Stop a groove

• 4 3 2 1 stop
• volume down
• let percussion continue -> stop cut drums -> volume down

Transition point

• The group is tired
• The pulse is unstable
• The group wants to explore something new

• What can I do to serve the circle?
  • Always remind myself this point.
• Follow the people who is following you
  • Work on what the group is offering you
• Create small success
